First AIU Hackathon

Last Sunday marked a great day not only for programming enthusiasts but also for those who love a good challenge and want to extend their skills. It was the 24th of April 2016 to be exact, the day of the first Hackathon ever to be held in Antalya International University, and it was an incredible one indeed. 10 teams came together, each comprising of two to four members and headed by a team leader, with a goal in sight to finish the project in hand. The team leaders chose their projects before hand, then the Code Club members picked the projects that suited them best according to their level of skills, knowledge and interests. Projects were of vast varieties such as android apps, IOS apps, cryptography, programmable control devices …etc.

The event kicked off at 10 am with a small presentation by the Code Club president (Evis Hoxha), introducing the club, its board members (Suha Baobaid, Musa Tokgöz, Rıdvan Aksu) and aim. Soon after, laptops were switched on, eyes were focused on the screens in front of them with full attention. Team leaders were in charge of explaining the fundamentals of the project they had in hand, the techniques, the programming language and had to walk their team members through out the entire development process. They also had to make sure that they engage their team members in discussions and assign them some tasks. Each team started brainstorming to come up with the best way to implement their goal. Ideas swirled around the room, increasing the excitement of participants as they came one step closer to their vision. Everyone continued with determination for the next few hours, even though each one faced a difficulty at some point and had a confused expression on their faces as they came across an unusual bug. However, that didn’t hinder them as each proceeded with persistent efforts.

Hours rolled by with keyboard tapping sound dominating the environment. Thereafter, lunch time came, and participants employed that as an opportunity to talk with the other team members and exchange thoughts. Chatter filled the lunch hall, as all enjoyed their meal. But then everyone hurried back to their teams to finish their projects.

Few hours were left on the clock, and every minute of coding counted. Every team was finalizing their projects by adding the last touches and preparing their presentations. At 4:00 pm, after 6 hours of coding, the presentations period commenced. Each team presented their project with such creativeness and excitement that exceeded expectations. Some projects had funny annotations, some resembled hacker-like applications, and others had a nifty user interface. Each project was presented with success finally, which summed up the accomplishment of the whole event.

It was an event to be remembered as it not only enabled students to learn new things or extend their abilities but also it was a way for them to socialize and discuss with others who share their interests. Therefore Code Club team aspires to create more of such diverse events in the near future.
